Wellington Winter Champs 2008

The 2008 Wellington Winter Champs are coming up, so start training! The competition will be four performance days with a rest day in the middle. The competition has both world ranking and world record status, thanks to A-Judge Grant Graves from the USA. Get entries in quick, this competition is not to be missed!

First Day Draw

The first day of the 2008 Wellington Winter Champs is tomorrow! Six divers will be competing, five with a shot at national records and two world record attempts. Good luck guys!

Competition day 1

Day one saw one world record and two national records fall.

Lazy Seal Freediving Club member Kathryn McPhee set a new world record in dynamics without fins with a swim of 151m.

In the same discipline Walter Steyn set a new Australian record of 165m and club member Phil Clayton set a new UK record of 132m.

Maria Hovden, who only recently joined the club did an awesome 4'38" static.

Ruth Griffin narrowly missed the UK national record (122m)for dynamics acheiving 125m in her tiny fins but recieving a penalty.

Competition day 2

The stars of today's show were Walter Steyn and Maria Hovden.

Walter set a new Australian record in dynamic with a 206m dive potentially launching him into first place on this year's rankings list!

Club member Maria Hovden set a new personal best in dynamics with 70m.

Competition day 3

Draw for tomorrow is below. Only three divers. It seems people are saving themselves for the 50m pool on Wednesday.

Competition day 3

We only ended up with 2 competitors today.

Today's highlight was club member Dave Mullins' 213m dynamic without fins to match the current world record held by Tom Sietas.

Competition day 4

We changed pools for today's competition. Four divers attempted dynamic swims in Naenae Olympic pool (50m).

Kathryn McPhee set a new NZ record with a 179m dynamic.

Final results

Walter finished off the competition with a huge 175m dynamic without fins pushing out his own national record by yet another 10m to become one of the world top four.

Overall it's been a very successful week as far as records go:
Kathryn McPhee: world record dynamic without fins & NZ national record in dynamic.
Dave Mullins: equal to world record in dynamics without fins.
Walter Steyn: two Australian national records in dynamic without fins and one in dynamics
Phil Clayton: British national record in dynamic without fins
