Lazy Seals Freediving ClubFreediving is a water based breath holding sport. The various events of the sport challenge the diver for breath hold time (statics), distance swum (dynamics) and for depths achieved (constant weight). Freediving is a challenge for the mind as much as for the body, as competitors must overcome their own anxieties to achieve top performances.
The Lazy Seals operate under AIDA New Zealand, a subsidiary of the worldwide freediving organisation, AIDA International. Under AIDA, there are officially eight different disciplines, though only six are practiced in competition. Click on any discipline below for more information.
Pool Events:
Statics (STA) - Timed breath hold while remaining still.
Dynamics (DYN & DNF) - Distance swum on a single breath, either with or without fins.
Depth Events:
Constant Weight (CWT & CNF) - Depth swum down on a breath, either with or without fins.
Free Immersion (FIM) - Depth reached while pulling down and back up on a rope.
Sled Diving:
These only performed for record attempts. Few freedivers take part in these specialist disciplines.
Variable Weight - Riding a weighted sled down to a depth, then pulling back up the line.
No Limits - Absolute depth reached on a single breath. Usually divers ride a sled down to the bottom and inflate a lift balloon to return.
